1. Describe the early years of your musical roots and how your talent
was nurtured.
I just always loved to sing. I grew up singing in church and was
always in my room listening to my favorite artists and singing
along. Mostly, I remember Bonnie Raitt and Whitney Houston in my
earlier years along with some country and even rock bands like Red
Hot Chili Peppers and ACDC. I had a variety of musical taste and
think that my older brother helped to cultivate that. I would mess
around on his guitar but never took lessons at that young age.
I received my first guitar when I was 18 as a gift from my mother
and started taking lessons right away. Within months I had a huge
folder of songs that I could play and had started writing some of
my own. From there I just continued learning, playing and writing
to bring me to the point I am at today.
2. Were there any events, people or catalysts that were musically
influential?
I don’t know if there was anyone or an event that sparked my musical
interest or were influential. I think it was just my thirst
for music that influenced my musical talents. I think if my mom
had bought me that guitar when I was 12, I would have started
writing then. It just happened that my musical timeline started a
little bit later than it maybe could have.
3. How would you describe your sound?
Well, I mostly get the reference to Sheryl Crow. I think that is
because of the acoustic nature and similar writing styles that we
have. But I would describe it as an acoustic rock sound. I think
I have a unique sound all my own though.
4. How many CDs have you released as a solo artist?
One album
5. What is the name of your latest CD and describe the creative process
that went into it?
“Something To Say “ I wrote most of the album a few years before
I even went into the studio. Some of the songs were arranged differently
in the studio process and some were changed so much that they really
became a different song in the process. I was in the studio for almost 2 yrs
with this project and brought in many different musicians to be a
part of it.
6. Where did you record your latest CD and who was involved in the
recording and production of it?
I recorded at 5th St.Studios and Razors Edge Studios both in Austin,
TX. I was involved in every part of the recording and production of
this album. I hired different studio musicians to come in and lay
down the bass, drums and percussion. I did all of the acoustic 6
string and 12 string guitar parts and well as some of the electric
parts along with the producers that I worked with. I had my friend
Omar Lopez come in and lay down some live violin tracks as well as
Jackson Eli who did some amazing work on his guitar for Fall Away
(track 8). Craig Saddler at 5th St. helped with the
production but I was involved in every step of the process from the
recording to the mixing to the mastering to the design of the album
all the way through the printing process.
7. How involved are you in the recording process of the projects you
have worked on?
Well Something To Say is the only project I have done and I was
very involved and I foresee it always being that way. I love the
studio process and seeing how everything works and the creativity
that can happen behind those 4 walls.
8. Who are the current members of your band?
Myself, Ryan Redfern, Adam Freeborg and Kelly Douglas
9. How do you feel about playing to a live audience?
I love playing live. I really like the connection that I can get
when I see these people right in front of me.
10. What does your live set up consist of?
I am on acoustic guitar, Ryan plays bass, Adam is on drums and
Kelly is on lead electric and some acoustic and backing vocals.
11. Who does your booking? Are you under management?
I am currently under management with Inner Global Records.
12. What are some of your favorite venues to play?
I don’t know if I really have a favorite. We have played a lot of
different places here in Austin. I guess I am looking forward to
playing larger venues in this city, then maybe I will have a
favorite.
13. What music organizations are you affiliated with?
ASCAP
14. Is there a venue that you play regularly at?
No.
