She's folky, edgy and honest. Her songwriting style redefines the term
"no-holds-barred". Shameless lyrics drive a clean, sharp knife straight
through the hearts of her devoted audience, leaving them hungry for
more of that delicate, delicious voice. Her guitar work, ranging from
hard, driven strumming to free-style picking, will give you chills in all
the right places.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Carlyn first picked up a guitar at age
10. She taught herself to play by picking out melodies one note at a
time, seeking a few lessons here and there to define her abilities and
create her own unique sound. Music became a regular part of her life.
After college, Hutchins joined Thunderstrings and Onyx, a hard
strumming folk band in her hometown of Philadelphia, PA. When the group broke
up, she dabbled in the Philly music scene for a few years, deciding
whether to pursue her love for music or focus more on her degree in
biology. In 1998, practicality won and Carlyn moved to Boston, MA to pursue a
career in biotechnology. But, music was and is in her blood. In 2003,
life circumstances drew her back to songwriting and performing. Her
skills today mirror her long relationship with music, her intelligence, and
her sensitivity to the world around her.
She has played numerous shows in venues across Boston, Philly, and
Providence. She has shared the stage or has played shows in the same night
with local and regional talents such as Joey Ammo, Mike Delaney, Patti
DeRosa, Andrea Paquin, Steve Rapson, and many others.
In March 2005, she released a 5 song EP, the self-titled "Carlyn
Hutchins", and in early 2006 released a CD of live performances called
"Session: Live".
Her new CD, "Lust Love Lost", is the studio version of the live CD. She
is joined by New England regional talents Joey Ammo (guitar), Allison
Hale (harmony vocals), Don "DC" Culp (percussion), Lisa Annunziata
(bass), and Deb Blackadar (percussion), and looks forward to the August 2006
release date.
