Suzanne calls her style alt-americana. You might hear Patti Smith channeling Lucinda Williams, channeling Nina Simone and Neutral Milk Hotel, as produced by Junior Wells and Fatboy Slim. You will definitely hear her sweet and gravelly vintage guitar tone, voice and poetry to match, artfully channeling herself. Suzanne shows all her roots through stained glasses on her latest release, the self-produced "BOOMchick," (available at CDBaby.com). One misty-eyed fan put it this way: "Her songs are so good she could play them on a bucket and they would still work." In 2003, the judges at the Willamette Valley Folk Festival voted Suzanne a winner of the New Song Competition with her song, "Never Let U Down," also on her EP. "Imposter" reached into the double digits (out of over 1000 places) on Neil Young's "Living With War Today" listener-voted ranking. "I Reckon" and "Never Let U Down" are in rotation online at Desert Highway Radio, while "Dead End Desire" is playing on Radiofly1. Suzanne's songs can also be heard on IndieGuitarists.com. All in all, the strawberry blonde northwest transplant from Kansas isn't complaining. Music has always been a way of life for her, having grown up in a prolifically musical family where entertainment equalled singing and playing instruments together. Suzanne's brother, Freddie Brooks, is a professional blues harmonica virtuoso, whose licks can be heard on the TV show "According to Jim." His harp playing is featured on Suzanne's song "Intention." She encourages anyone with a love for harmonica or the blues to seek out Freddie's cd, "One Little Word," available through Amazon.com. She is often joined onstage by another family member, bassist/vocalist (and cousin) Tom Thompson. Their voices blend seamlessly. The quality of vocals is something frequently praised, whenever Suzanne performs. (from "Never Let U Down") "I wish that I could confidently announce that I would never ever let you down. I wish I wasn't cold as my beer is dark as my fear is bitter. And if a deity would only come down, then I would follow him or her around. But you're the closest thing that I've ever found, so I'm followin' you." |
